PEPTIDES – not just for naughty athletes!

WARNING: This is a pretty wordy post. But totally worth it..

So you started reading the ingredient list on the box for your new serum and some of the ingredients look like they could be a small Russian town or tennis star? The good thing is when you come across an ingredient with the term “peptide” you can be sure that it is working hard for you!

So what exactly are peptides and why would you want them in your skincare? Well honestly, I had no idea how things like these worked not so long ago, its amazing how clever your products can actually be! Peptides are a small chain of amino acids not quite big enough to be called a protein, but still important enough to carry out many different functions within the body.

Basically our bodies are made up of different molecules like protein, connective tissue, fats and DNA and as we age many things contribute to the degeneration of our bodies. Free radical damage from external sources and internal stresses and the natural ageing process hugely impacts the bodies ability to regenerate vital proteins like collagen and elastin; this is where peptides come into play.

Peptides have many different functions in the body, some acting like hormones, some like neurotransmitters, and they can kind of ‘trick’ your body into producing a response (like making more collagen or preventing age spots) by communicating with other cells. Too clever!!

Here are some clever peptide products – I’ll try and explain the ingredients by skin concern…

CODAGE

Day Cream  – Lovely lightweight moisturiser that would suit most skin types.

Acetyl Hexapeptide-37 • Hydrator • This promotes inner hydration mechanisms and water movement, rejuvenates by improving barrier function.

Diaminopropionoyl Tripeptide-33 • Antioxidant Action • Prevents damage that is directly caused by UV radiation.

Skin Recovery Serum – Rich silky serum for those who love a serious treatment and need to heal the skin.

• Acetyl Hexapeptide-37 • Hydrator • This promotes inner hydration mechanisms and water movement, rejuvenates by improving barrier function.

Acetyl Tetrapeptide-15 • Preventative • Decreases the activity pain receptors thereby making the skin less reactive and increasing its tolerance level.

DR. DENNIS GROSS

Alpha Beta Medi Spa Peel – Like the classic Alpha Beta Daily Peel but sooo much better! This is much more firming and so good for skin that has been a bit neglected.

Tetrapeptide-21 • Stimulant • More effective than Matrixyl its low molecular mass means it can penetrate much closer to the target cell. Stimulates collagen production.

* Not actually a peptide but this product also lists Collagen Amino Acids which are super important.

Triple C Peptide Firming Oil – Silky and light oil to hydrate, firm, strengthen and brighten skin.

Palmitoyl Tripeptide-28 • Stimulant • Improves elasticity and firmness, skin strengthening.

MIZON

Human Ogliopeptide-1 • Stimulant • A synthetic protein that accelerates skin healing and increases skin renewal.

Copper Tripeptide-1 • Stimulant • Accelerates healing, skin thickness and elasticity, helpful with tissue repair and inflammation.

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 • Stimulant • Stimulates collagen synthesis and skin repair.

Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 • Hydrator • Marketed as a muscle relaxant, but studies have shown this to be minimal. It does have water binding benefits though.

Now these are just a few products but it gives you an idea of what to look for, obviously these products have many other fantastic ingredients in them as well.
